Every individual makes daily decisions about how they will approach their personal safety. This might come in the choice to park under a street lamp instead of in the dark, to do things with friends rather than going somewhere alone, or to carry a personal defense item. In whatever way a person chooses to protect themselves, serious thought should be given to the steps needed to carry that out.
Carrying a Defensive Weapon
If someone chooses to carry a personal defense item like a taser or sidearm, that is a decision that should be made carefully. Will it be carried in a bag or in a concealed shoulder holster? What is the best way to access it if needed? What situation warrants the use of such a tool? And most important: will the person be able to use it if needed?
These are not easy questions to answer. Don’t carry a tool you aren’t willing to use. Anyone who owns and carries a defensive weapon should take the time to practice with it. Gun ranges can be found in most areas, both urban and rural. This will ensure the owner is comfortable with their weapon and able to use it when needed.
Probably the most vital element of personal protection is to be aware of the environment. This doesn’t just mean steering clear of the rougher side of town but being generally aware of what is going on nearby. Make note of exits, groups of people, and unusual behavior. Be cautious wearing headphones when in an unfamiliar place to avoid being caught off guard.
